Individuals 16-24
VINCENT HARDER
AGE: 22
BIRTHDAY: April 9, 1982
HOMETOWN: Bondi, NSW
STAR SIGN: Aries
NICKNAME: Vince (one of many!)
OCCUPATION: Performer / Dance Tutor
Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Vincent Harder came to
Australia two years ago with the dream of pursuing his
music career. From the humble beginnings of winning school
talent quests, Vincent went onto earn a Diploma in Performing
Arts (Vocal Major) from the Excel School of Performing
Arts in New Zealand.
It was whilst studying at Excel in 1999 that he met his
wife, Savannah. Vincent proposed backstage at a show they
were both appearing in, and after pulling their wedding
together in just two weeks, they have now been married
for almost two years.
Now based in Sydney , Vincent completed a successful year-long
run starring as Simba in the Sydney production of The
Lion King and was a dancer on Guy Sebastian's concert
tour. He also teaches hip hop dance.
JACOB BUTLER
AGE: 22
BIRTHDAY: March 29, 1982
HOMETOWN: Littlehampton , SA
STAR SIGN: Aries
NICKNAME: Jakey B The Rock Kid (amongst others!)
OCCUPATION: Electrical Appliance Salesman
Jacob Butler wouldn't normally have thought to audition
for a show like The X Factor, but he dreamt that he was
in the competition and so decided to try his luck at the
Adelaide auditions. Bet he's glad he did now!
Though he started a Commerce degree, Jacob's academic
career was short-lived and after three weeks, was decidedly
over. Much more at home on the stage, Jacob, who plays
guitar, drums and piano (and by his own admission, the
fool occasionally!), chose to follow his musical roots,
performing with cover band Single White Male . With his
strong singing and songwriting skills, a solo career beckoned.
Music has always played a big part in Jacob's life, having
been brought up by parents who themselves are performers.
His father's work managing radio stations also meant that
Jacob was surrounded by song from an early age.
GEMMA PURDY
AGE: 16
BIRTHDAY: April 3, 1988
HOMETOWN: Nunawading , VIC
STAR SIGN: Aries
NICKNAME: Gem or Gemz
OCCUPATION: Student
Although Gemma Purdy is the baby of Kate's 16-24 category,
you'd never guess by the big voice that belies her years.
When she names Ella Fitzgerald, Janis Joplin, Natalie
Cole, Sarah Vaughan, Eva Cassidy and Erykah Badu as favourite
performers, it begins to make sense.
Currently a Year 11 student at Box Hill Senior Secondary
School in Melbourne, Gemma's passion for performance has
been life-long. Gemma appeared in commercials as a child
and has studied singing since she was six years old. She
is also a trained dancer and still studies dance weekly.
Brought up in an artistic household, it's little wonder
Gemma's star is on the rise - her mum Kerry was involved
in amateur theatre and singing, and by sheer coincidence,
was also tutored by vocal coach Glenda Walsh. Gemma's
father Mick is involved in the entertainment industry
behind the scenes as a cameraman, and her siblings are
also musically inclined.

RUSSELL GOOLEY
AGE: 27
BIRTHDAY: September 27, 1977
HOMETOWN: Narrogin , WA
STAR SIGN: Libra
NICKNAME: Gus
OCCUPATION: Recreation Centre Supervisor
Russell Gooley is The X Factor's authentic boy from the
bush. Russell was born in Moora , Western Australia and
lived in the Perth suburb of Armadale until age 13 when
he moved to Narrogin, a small town south east of Perth
, population 4,500. Russell had to get in the car at 3am
to make the drive from Narrogin to Perth to audition.
A proud Narrogin boy through and through, Russell lives
there with his wife Amanda, a beauty therapist, and 7
year-old daughter Shenae. One of Russell's dreams is for
Shenae to be able to say honestly "my Daddy's famous"!
The X Factor is not Russell's first taste of stardom.
His brother paid the $10 entry fee for him into the inaugural
Duke of York Hotel's talent quest in Narrogin. It was
the first time he'd sung in front of an audience and he
blew them away, claiming the $750 winner's cheque - and
giving his brother a cool $50 for his trouble!
ROSLYNN MAHE
AGE: 30
BIRTHDAY: September 12, 1974
HOMETOWN: Granville, NSW
STAR SIGN: Virgo
OCCUPATION: Office Administrator
Originally from New Zealand , Roslynn Mahe moved to Australia
in 2000 with her partner James to pursue both employment
and musical opportunities.
Coming from a large and musical family of Tongan and Samoan
heritage, it's not surprising that Roslynn, the eldest
of six children, should find herself front and centre
on The X Factor. In 1994 Roslynn, along with her siblings,
parents and uncles, started a family band in New Zealand
which inspired her to keep chasing her dreams through
music.
Family means a great deal to Roslynn, and her father in
particular has been a huge influence in her life. He encouraged
her to learn piano from age six, and she also went onto
study violin and piano accordion. Interestingly, Roslynn
has never undertaken any singing lessons.
JANIE SHRAPNEL
AGE: 47
BIRTHDAY: July 19, 1957
HOMETOWN: Samford , QLD
STAR SIGN: Cancer
OCCUPATION: Renovator
Queenslander Janie Shrapnel described coming along
to The X Factor auditions as her worst nightmare. Struck
down by a genuine fear of performing, Janie literally
had to force herself to audition. While she had a record
deal and released a single at age 19, the performer
within her lay dormant for many years, until 2000 when
she joined a local songwriters group and regained her
confidence.
She's now very happy to have conquered those nerves
and left her fear behind, securing her place in the
Final 9 as The X Factor's eldest contestant. With influences
including Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Missy Higgins,
Janie also writes a great deal of her own material.
Janie and partner Allan, who have been together for
five years, work together as renovators. They tackle
both the organisational and hands-on side of the business,
and relish the opportunity to create amazing transformations.

THE BROTHERSHIP
Adam Philippou
AGE: 30
HOMETOWN: Kensington Park, SA
OCCUPATION: Student / Administration
George Philippou
AGE: 33
HOMETOWN: Sydney , NSW
OCCUPATION: Photographer
Michael Philippou
AGE: 29
HOMETOWN: Frewville , SA
OCCUPATION: Business Sales Consultant
The three Philippou brothers, George, Adam and Michael,
are no strangers to the fame game. Hailing from Adelaide
, they had a taste of stardom when they moved to London
together in 1995 to pursue their music. Signed to RCA
and recording under the name of Universal , they released
three singles and made numerous television appearances
including Top Of The Pops, as well as a live performance
in front of thousands at Old Trafford. In 2002 the brothers
also spent 12 months in LA songwriting and recording demos.
KAYA
Alexandra Kaye
AGE: 29
HOMETOWN: Bondi Junction, NSW
Juleiaah Boehm
AGE: 23
HOMETOWN: Camperdown, NSW
Sally Stevens
AGE: 25
HOMETOWN: Bondi, NSW
Emma Deans
AGE: 22
HOMETOWN: Balmain, NSW
The girls all attended the University of Western Sydney
, and while they knew each other, weren't necessarily
friends. Until one day when Alex bumped into Emma in the
street and exchanged numbers. Along with Juleiaah, they
began performing together, and then, when one of Emma's
assignments required another voice, Alex asked Sally,
who she knew through a friend, to join in.
As soon as they started singing together as four voices,
they knew they were onto something special - they found
refuge and inspiration in each others' company - and each
others' voices.
Originally called Kaya in August , after a friend's baby,
the group now known as Kaya only formed in 2004, but the
girls have already shared in success, with performances
at The Basement in Sydney , and now as finalists on The
X Factor.
RANDOM
Wayne (aka Wayne The Wizard) Tauvao
AGE: 19
TJ (aka Tasesa Junior) Tauvao
AGE: 16
Donald Tauvao
AGE: 16
Andy-Iese (aka Jesse) Tolo-Paepae
AGE: 21
Xlocaine (Xy) Latu
AGE: 26
These five Brisbane boys who call themselves Random were
literally just that.
Xy Latu and Jesse Tolo-Paepae arrived at the Brisbane
auditions as Rough Diamonds - while sixteen year-old TJ
Tauvao came to try his luck as a solo artist, with brother
Wayne Tauvao and cousin Donald Tauvao in tow for moral
support.
The five, who had met briefly before at a youth talent
quest and at the Kci & JoJo concert in 2004, soon
got to jamming in the queue and shortly thereafter, super-group
Random was born. The rest, as they say, is history.
